Concept Art – The Space Between Us

Concept Description

What would modern children engage with today? That’s the question we answered with this concept art for a new children’s book illustration. In our modern society, we often see children watching 3D animated cartoons, playing video games that factor into their every-day learning experiences and implementing technology wherever it can be conveniently applied. There is a modernization to everyday-life, expressed through animation, that children today connect with. Years ago, illustrations and hand-drawings ruled the roost, but now, digital life is a normalcy for artists. To support a modern and engaging fairy-tale, we developed a stylized, 3D generated illustration. In this low-poly concept, we experimented with a modern, non-traditional approach that included cartoon-like animals and environments rendered with 3D software. While most current approaches still involve some form of traditional illustration, we decided to give this particular design a modern twist that resonates with current design trends and also looks especially unique for an e-book. Here, we captured a few angles of a bear and a fish sharing a moment. Both models share traditional silhouettes, instead of exaggerated cartoon proportions to maintain a more realistic life-like physique.
